As work becomes increasingly dynamic, uncertain and knowledge-based, organizations must continuously develop innovative and error free products and services to achieve competitive advantage and success. However, in many cases, innovations are not possible without making errors, as in the case of trials and errors. Thus, organizations' dual search for innovation and error-free performance can be fraught with tensions and paradoxes rooted in organizations' need to simultaneously cope with these contradictory demands. To resolve tensions and paradoxes, researchers suggest the notion of "switching" (i.e., transformation of focus of attention and resources allocation) as an important mechanism through which inconsistent demands can be synthesized. For example, companies focusing on being reliable and trustable, may be able to achieve both minimum rate of errors and maximum amount of innovation if they would shift their attention between new methodologies for effectiveness and cost reduction, and error avoidance.

In this PDW, we aim to introduce the concept of attention switching and demonstrate how the transformation of attention and resources allocation between different states such as of error elimination and innovation might be achieved. Thus, the PDW will provide a milestone for future research of switching phenomena as well as practical implementation. Moreover,  using an interactive approach, we hope to deepen our understanding of some fundamental issues in contradicting organizational priorities in the areas of innovation, creativity, and errors.
