    I am designing and offering an elective course on Personnel Selection for 2nd year MBA students specializing in HRM. 
     
    Request for recommendations on reference text books, case studies and assignments that can be used to support this course.

    Ranjeet,

     

    Apologies for being a self-publicist, but I'd like to recommend my own book Experiencing Recruitment and Selection (Wiley). The main body of the book relates people's experiences (both applicants and recruiters) of organisational entry by telling their stories. I have interwoven a narrative around these to pull out key lessons.

     

    I'm told the book works well for illustrations and examples, as a core text and to ignite classroom discussion. It is primarily designed to work alongside one of the core texts such as the excellent Heneman and Judge.

    Dear Ranjit, I use a book called Hiring Right, a practical guide for
    managers, published by Sage. It's very inexpensive on Amazon. The major
    assignment for the semester is that each student pick a particular job to
    hire for... and follow the book outline. Develop the job analysis, create
    the application form, the interview questions, the employee tests, the
    reference checking process, etc. At the end of the semester, there is a
    full-blown hiring plan, and a deep understanding of the process for
    developing one.

    I have used Heneman & Judge' Staffing Organization 5th ed (2006) with good results. It is published by McGraw-Hill. It also has associated comprehensive case book also.
