  • 1.  Board of Directors' self-report effectiveness survey items

    Posted 03-06-2008 16:07

    Hello,

I wonder if members of the list might be able to help me, please? I am looking for a self-report scale to administer to members of a Board of Directors. The Boards are for not-for-profit organisations but are complex and often substantial business enterprises.

While there is fair amount in the literature on governance metrics rating services and looking at how the stock market might evaluate Board performance (ref: Sonnefeld, 2004, for example), I am having trouble finding self-report evaluations. There is a large amount of self-evaluation occurring through consultancies, but I am looking for published items or scales that I might be able to use in my study.

I'm seeking items measuring board members' opinions and attitudes towards their own "board effectiveness". Or similar...

With many thanks in anticipation of your assistance,

    Denise Jepsen

    Dear Denise,

Are you interested in measuring the effectiveness of the board members
at the individual level of analysis or at the group level of analysis?

If you are interested in measuring board member effectiveness at the
group level, you may find the following book helpful.
    Schoorman, F.D., & Schneider, B. (1988).Facilitating work
    effectiveness. Massachusetts/Toronto: Lexington Books.

While it does not contain a scale specifically for board member
effectiveness, the researchers use Katz and Kahn's (1978) subsystem
framework to gain a deeper understanding of the components of work
    effectiveness for different contexts.

    Best wishes with your research,

Hi Denise, you may want to look at the article.
Title: Commitment and Performance of Nonprofit Board Members
Source: Nonprofit management & leadership [1048-6682] Preston yr.2004
    vol.15 iss.2 pg.221 -238
Also, the co-author William Brown has a 2007 article also in NPML on
Board Performance and Competent Board Members and has several scales
    that may be relevant.

    Hi Denise,

Are you interested in measuring the effectiveness of board members at the
group level? If so, have you considered investigating a board's
intellectual capital (human, social, cultural, structural)?

Although my dissertation research on board performance did not use self-
report items or scales, it was based off several measures and models of
intellectual capital. Bontis (1998) conducted a pilot study, and Nicholson
& Kiel (2004) constructed a model that identifies areas that the board of
directors must concentrate on to develop their intellectual capital and
improve performance. The focus of the research is on corporate boards,
however, many of the concepts can be applied to non-profit boards.

Perhaps the ideas and concepts might be helpful to you in developing self-
    report items and/or scales.

    Best wishes with your research!
