    Apologies for cross-postings.

We would like to invite you to join us for AOM symposium (#1247) titled "Dealing With Competing Paradoxical Demands in Search of Co-existence."

This symposium aims to reposition innovation and creativity in the Academy and encourage scholars to think more critically about how to integrate conflicting views and consider a much broader set of managerial implications. We are bringing together a group of top-notch scholars who explicitly focus on studying innovation, creativity, and errors, and exploring how organizations can mindfully balance all related issues in the face of various conditions. With this range of studies, including both theoretical and empirical work, covering several different levels of analysis (e.g., individual- level, team- level), across various study contexts (e.g., undergraduate students, Chinese employees), and using different research methodologies (e.g., lab experiments, multi-sourced, longitudinal surveys), we offer more insights on turning competing tensions into the co-existence of seemingly competing demands in organizations.

Please find the specific session information below. We look forward to seeing you in Vancouver!

Abstract:     The increasing complexity, dynamism, and interconnectedness of contemporary business environments demand that organizations cope with simultaneously contradicting requirements and paradoxical tensions. However, paradoxical tensions are complex and challenging. To date, we still lack a clear understanding of what and how would help organizations and their members respond to simultaneous contradicting requirements and paradoxical tensions. Therefore, this symposium aims to reposition innovation and creativity in the Academy and encourage scholars to think more critically about how to integrate conflicting views and consider a much broader set of managerial implications. We believe that by building on the latest research and redefining and disentangling the paradoxical relationships between errors and innovation, between creative solutions and their implementation, and between tensional leadership behaviors in handling individual creativity, a more comprehensive view on this critical topic of creativity and innovation will emerge. We are bringing together faculty who explicitly focus on studying innovation and creativity as well as faculty who focus their investigations on errors, looking at how organizations can mindfully balance all related issues in the face of various conditions.
