Dear Listserv,

I am pursuing my Masters in Organizational Psychology at the University of Hartford in Connecticut. I am working on my final capstone project and enhancing research I have been doing on the vital importance of cross-cultural training for expatriates. I have researched several psychological journals and databases. I wondered if you or your organization could provide me with further ideas for materials, articles, books, or studies that I can use for my project.

I have gathered from my research that there is unfortunately, little empirical evidence to quantify the effectiveness of cross-cultural training in preparing an employee for an overseas assignment. This is the reason that companies have been reluctant to commit the funds and time to enhance training for their employees.

My research gives the impression that more companies are now valuing this important training process. I wondered if you could share basic information about the training workshops you have experienced or that you offer, which types of companies/industries use these workshops, is there proof of workshop effectiveness, and which measures are used to evaluate the effectiveness.

I direct the Study Abroad Office at the University of Hartford and am very involved with advising and preparing my students for their journey overseas. The research I have conducted on this topic throughout my Masters program has been especially interesting and I would greatly appreciate any additional information or advice you can provide.

Try looking onto the Cultural Assimilator.

According to this website there is validity data.

It's an oldie but goodie. It was used by the Peace Corps.

There were several meta-analyses on cross-cultural training effectiveness in the early 90's. A more recent meta-analysis and a very good conceptual review are:

    Bhawuk, D. P. S., & Brislin, R. W. (2000). Cross-cultural training: A review. Applied Psychology: An International Review, 49, 162–191.

Morris, M. A. & Robie, C. 2001. A meta-analysis of the effects of cross-cultural training on expatriate performance and adjustment. International Journal of Training and Development, 5, 112-125.

    Sarah and Olga,

You might want to check on the research done on the rate of failure of expatriates, or the number of them who return to headquarters before completing their international assignment. This is probably more dramatic because the costs associated with it are more obvious. It is interesting that we are still doing research on this need to provide cross-cultural training to expatriates. A recent Business Week (January 28, 2008) published a number of related articles that underscore the need for training in cross-cultural management, international business, and other related matters. One of the articles indicates that in the tech sector, "the strongest U.S. companies may be the ones with the biggest foot print abroad." This is also true for car companies, some retail, etc. The same BW issue has a special report on "Managing the Global Workforce." I don't understand why we still need to research the topic. We would not appoint as a CFO a person with no training in finance! Why would any company want to appoint an executive with only a domestic view to manage operations around the world?

    Thanks,

    Ivan
