    Hi OBers,

I'm updating my video collection for my future OB/HR and OD classes and would like to know if you can recommend any particularly great DVDs (preferably recent), web links, etc. on OB/HR and OD topics.  I teach all the usual OB topics (e.g., motivation, leadership, team dynamics), HR topics (e.g., selection, training, compensation), and OD topics (e.g., human process interventions, technostructural interventions, strategic  change interventions).

As you probably know, there is a mountain of options out there, so I'm trying to narrow my search.  Your help is very much appreciated!

    Hi Thomas

Have you seen this excellent work:

Billsberry, J., Charlesworth, J. and Leonard, P. (eds) (2012) Moving Images: Effective Teaching with Film and Television in Management, Charlotte, NC: Information Age Publishing.

The recent movie The Imitation Game (2014) can be read as a case study in the employment of someone on the autism spectrum; the movie illustrates issues and dilemmas for employers, selection interviewers, and colleagues as well as for the autistic candidate – in this case the mathematician Alan Turing.

If you can stretch to television programmes, then review The Wire as a management case study/ethnography:

Holt, R. and Zundel, M. (2014) 'Understanding management, trade, and society through fiction: lessons from The Wire', Academy of Management Review, 39 (4): 576-85.

I hope these suggestions are helpful.

    Best wishes

    Hi Thomas,

I have had some luck with using TedTalks in my classes.  There are a number of them that fit OB/HR topics.  Just do a search on the website.

Also would you share what you find with me.  Thanks.

I too use a lot of Ted Talks (good one illustrating equity theory with monkeys). Also some really good clips from The Office (conflict management styles) and the best clip on reinforce theory comes from the Big Bang Theory TV show.

I too would love to have a summary of what you find.

I use a documentary of Cirque du Solei to summarize the whole recruiting process. It is quite interesting but long, around 50 minutes. Thus I ask students to watch it on their own.
    here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLouxprAHtQ&feature=share

I also use John Oliver's show to discuss gender wage gap.
    Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsB1e-1BB4Y

In addition, I always play a video regarding introverted leaders in the leadership session or employee development  session. This is the video I use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=filvlODRukw

    hope it helps

    Tom,

For OB, I use Daniel Pink and Dan Ariely's TED talks for motivation and decision making. I also use "Mind Over Money" from PBS (NOVA) for Decision Making. There is a great "Office" episode on conflict resolution (I believe season 2).

I also cap off the semester by showing Apollo 13--old but a great way to look at all OB topics in one shot (and some of my undergrads are shocked when they find out it is a true story!).

For HR, I use clips from "Up in the Air" -- George Clooney firing people. In addition, the movie "Office Space" has some great sections on performance appraisals. PBS's American Experience has a great documentary on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that I use to introduce unions.

    Hi Tom,

Here are a few I find helpful:

John Medina’s brain rules on schema, memory, perception, stress, multitasking, gender, etc. are very entertaining and informative: http://brainrules.net/brain-rules-video (most are fewer than 5 minutes).

Students love the TED Talk by Amy Cuddy: “Your body language shapes who you are.” I show it in relation to behavioral performance management: http://www.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_shapes_who_you_are.html (21:03)

This video about women and work-life balance generates great discussion in class with men saying it applies to them as well: "More magazine's Lesley Seymour on 'Women at Work: Ambition Gap?' discusses why many American women are opting for a more balanced life over a career dominated lifestyle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoJovfIXZfU (5:38)

And to demonstrate emotional contagion, I use: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0ewCD_-jIA (4:01)

    Hello Tom,

I use the You Tube clip on 'village of 100' (there are several versions - see this one for an example:
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jNnbO8x4JAY).

I use it as an opener in my diversity course as it helps start the conversation on societal level power, dominance and influence (who has it and who doesn't etc). Most of the students I teach come from a relatively privileged background and it is an eye-opener for them.

    Tom,

Thanks for asking this question.  The growing list has been really useful.

    To add to the list:

In addition to Apollo 13, I have used various clips from "From the Earth to the Moon," the Tom Hanks produced HBO miniseries.  I particularly like the opening scene which allows one to juxtapose several different elements of leadership and leadership styles.  Also, there is an entire one hour episode on the creative process that led to the design of the lunar lander.  I've never used it in class, but it seems ripe.

Finally, I stumbled across this video on ESPN (http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=5854843) a few years go.  It's about the use of helmet stickers as reward and motivational tools in college football.  I've used it as a way to coalesce discussion about team vs. individual rewards.

I also use John Oliver's show to discuss gender wage gap.

In addition, I always play a video regarding introverted leaders in the leadership session or employee development  session. This is the video I use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=filvlODRukw

I too use a lot of Ted Talks (good one illustrating equity theory with monkeys). Also some really good clips from The Office (conflict management styles) and the best clip on reinforce theory comes from the Big Bang Theory TV show.

I too would love to have a summary of what you find.

I use that clip from the Big Bang Theory, too!  Students love it and it really does help them remember what reinforcement is.

I also use this short video which goes into several examples of cognitive dissonance.  https://youtu.be/bp39qSdyTc4

One more clip I use is the scene in Mean Girls about cliques to talk about social identity theory  https://youtu.be/RRteokw7m80

I just saw McFarland last night. It occurred to me that it would be great for leadership (especially), but also for diversity.  Not put on dvd yet, but something to keep your eye on for the future!

I feel the need to add to this discussion that several PDWs sponsored by MED (the Management Education & Development division of AOM; some of these PDWs in fact co-sponsored by OB and other divisions as well) this August deal precisely with the use of audiovisual and other arts in our classrooms (including, but not limited to dance, photography, poetry, student videography, mask making,...) and emerging technologies (mobile platforms, MOOCs, social networks,...). I know that we (the MED division) have no monopoly on creative ideas for Management courses, but I cannot contain my excitement for the many highly innovative PDWs that we have been able to include in this year's program!

Hope to see many fellow OB-ers in Vancouver at the AOM Conference (housing reservations are already being accepted, by the way...)!!

    Hi all,
Thanks a lot for this great conversation. I use several TED talks, including the one by Nigel Marsh on work-life balance, students love it. I also use the one by Daniel Goleman on compassion about why we are not very likely to provide compassion.

Other interesting insights come from the TV series House M.D., especially for what concerns team discussion and decision making. I use some episodes from series 4.

    Hi Thomas and fellow OBers

Anything about IDEO works very well when teaching more of a positive OB class (of course still great is the ABC documentary on building a shopping cart in a week with the design thinking method). If you want to show the undermining effect of pay-for-performance (or more precisely the multi-task effect) you can use Daniel Pinks "drive" which is available as a life cartoon and which sparks discussion for sure. And finally there are so many great TED Talks these days - particularly the ones from Dan Ariely, Dan Gilbert, Shawn Achor on happiness and motivation are great.

I also have used Harry Potter and Devil Wears Prada for socialization and culture. I can't wait to see the roll up, these are some interesting videos!  I also use Disney's Miracle on Ice for Tuckman's stages of groups.  Deirdre Dixon

    Hi Jesse and everyone else:
I am addicted to 12 Angry Men the 1957 version. Frequently I have talked about doing a whole OB course based on the film. I did design a multi-disciplinary course on Power and Influence. Sadly I retired before I got to teach it. And long before that I started developing a teaching guide for it but gave up when the outline got to 50 pages!

One recent film that directly addresses almost all these issues is Whiplash.

Another is The Wolf of Wall Street, but there might be one or two issues you need to think through before using it!

Other recent films with which I’ve had success teaching motivation and related topics are:

I’m updating my video collection for my future OB/HR and OD classes and would like to know if you can recommend any particularly great DVDs (preferably recent), web links, etc. on OB/HR and OD topics. I teach all the usual OB topics (e.g., motivation, leadership, team dynamics), HR topics (e.g., selection, training, compensation), and OD topics (e.g., human process interventions, technostructural interventions, strategic change interventions).

As you probably know, there is a mountain of options out there, so I’m trying to narrow my search. Your help is very much appreciated!

    Hi everyone,
This is a good discussion and hopefully I can chime in with some value-added information. I believe the key goals wrt incorporating videos are two-fold: a) convey lecture material visually as an alternative "see the content" method compared to just lecture/powerpoint, and b) to see the content in a relatable medium so as to better retain information.

I feel that any videos pretty much pre-1990 (maybe even pre-2000) do not achieve this second goal of students relating to the video, clearly, if they've never heard of the movie. They make our lecture look dated (which I personally do not want). To keep up with the times, videos must be updated to be relevant to the modern zeitgeist (i.e. language, actors, problems), along with being demonstrative of content.

The clear problem is that many videos we use are conveniently available youtube clips, which copyright claims make unavailable to the general public-unless they are quite old. I would therefore advise people to obtain clips of any newer movies/tv shows (as legally as possible) with DVDs/bluray/digital downloads, which are usable in live section teaching under the Classroom Use Exemption of copyright law (17 U.S. Code § 110). It sure takes more work to stay with the times, but I believe it is worth it (and lets us not feel bored showing the same videos again and again!)

A selection of videos I show in an upper-level undergrad HRM course, by topic:

    Job Analysis/Design:
    Scrubs (analyze core tasks/KSAOs)
Wreck-it Ralph (core job characteristics) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOQyA6Cj_cE

    Planning/Recruitment:
    The Firm

    Selection:
    The Office
The Big Bang Theory (understanding Big Five personality)
    Gattaca (genetics testing)

    Training:
    South Park (cartoon)
    Archer (cartoon)

    Performance Management:
    Waitress (task performance, ocbs, cwbs)
    Oceans 11 (goal-setting)
The Daily Show ("burn noticed" episode about confirmation bias)

    Compensation:
The Big Bang Theory (gift giving and Sheldon's equity sensitivity)
    Hitch (expectancy theory)
Office Space (motivation and pay efficacy)

    Retention/Legal Issues:
OSHA - Seaworld case (OSHA and employee health)
Workaholics (employee assistance programs "cool eric")
    The Simpsons (office morning calisthenics)

    Separation:
    Moneyball (firing players)
Up in the Air (interactional justice in firing)

I hope this is helpful to all reading!

    Tom,

One recent film that directly addresses almost all these issues is Whiplash.

Another is The Wolf of Wall Street, but there might be one or two issues you need to think through before using it!

Other recent films with which I've had success teaching motivation and related topics are:

    Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
    Another Earth
    The Life of Walter Mitty
    Departures (Okuribito)
    Her
    Beijing Bicycle
    The Hundred-Foot Journey
    The Intouchables
    Captain Phillips
    Human Resources (Ressources Humaines)
    Safety Not Guaranteed

And once it comes out on DVD/Blu-ray, I plan to use Nightcrawler.

    Hope this helps,

  • 21.  Videos etc for OB/HR classes

    Posted 03-27-2015 05:20

    Dear All,

    Thanks for this interesting conversation.

I used the books of J.Champoux as a source of inspiration, they are very useful.

Among the movies that I personally used in the class were:

Piece from Antz movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PM23eviKGX4 – at the beginning of basic OB course, to fuel the interest (especially for pre-experience audience, that otherwise finds it difficult to relate to organizational context) and to explain the structure of the course and key topics we will cover

Early minutes of the Life Boat movie – to introduce group vs team topic, and stages of team formation (the movie is very old, but still it produced a lot of interest in the classroom!)

Up in the air –  it has been already mentioned in this discussion, but to be more specific I use the following pieces to discuss how communication channels influence the communication results, and to discuss peculiarities of communicating virtually –

        • 03.45 – 05.45 – intro, what is their job
        • 01.03.16 – 01.07.36  -  firing virtually
        • (20.00 – 23.00 – Natalie presents new way of firing virtually in the company)

    Hi everyone,

This is a good discussion and hopefully I can chime in with some value-added information. I believe the key goals wrt incorporating videos are two-fold: a) convey lecture material visually as an alternative "see the content" method compared to just lecture/powerpoint, and b) to see the content in a relatable medium so as to better retain information.

I feel that any videos pretty much pre-1990 (maybe even pre-2000) do not achieve this second goal of students relating to the video, clearly, if they've never heard of the movie. They make our lecture look dated (which I personally do not want). To keep up with the times, videos must be updated to be relevant to the modern zeitgeist (i.e. language, actors, problems), along with being demonstrative of content.

The clear problem is that many videos we use are conveniently available youtube clips, which copyright claims make unavailable to the general public-unless they are quite old. I would therefore advise people to obtain clips of any newer movies/tv shows (as legally as possible) with DVDs/bluray/digital downloads, which are usable in live section teaching under the Classroom Use Exemption of copyright law (17 U.S. Code § 110). It sure takes more work to stay with the times, but I believe it is worth it (and lets us not feel bored showing the same videos again and again!)

A selection of videos I show in an upper-level undergrad HRM course, by topic:

    Job Analysis/Design:

    Scrubs (analyze core tasks/KSAOs)

Wreck-it Ralph (core job characteristics) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOQyA6Cj_cE

    Planning/Recruitment:

    The Firm

    Selection:

    The Office

The Big Bang Theory (understanding Big Five personality)

    Gattaca (genetics testing)

    Training:

    South Park (cartoon)

    Archer (cartoon)

    Performance Management:

    Waitress (task performance, ocbs, cwbs)

    Oceans 11 (goal-setting)

The Daily Show ("burn noticed" episode about confirmation bias)

    Compensation:

The Big Bang Theory (gift giving and Sheldon's equity sensitivity)

    Hitch (expectancy theory)

Office Space (motivation and pay efficacy)

    Retention/Legal Issues:

OSHA - Seaworld case (OSHA and employee health)

Workaholics (employee assistance programs "cool eric")

    The Simpsons (office morning calisthenics)

    Separation:

    Moneyball (firing players)

Up in the Air (interactional justice in firing)

I hope this is helpful to all reading!

I am also addicted to 12 Angry Men - I use it for teaching transformational leadership.‎ It's funny to watch undergrads be kind of bored and uninvolved at first and then, when Henry Fonda pulls out the duplicate knife, they gasp out loud and are hooked from then on! An incomparable film, IMHO.

    Posted 03-30-2015 15:12

I just watched the latest episode of ABC's 20/20, entitled "Occupational Hazards." The feature segment talks about the ouster of American Apparel's CEO and could be useful when discussing leadership, ethics, and/or sexual harassment. The second segment discusses social media behaviors that have led to firings and difficulties in obtaining future employment. The third segment discusses the stress of customer service jobs. The final segment discusses quitting your job with public flair.

    Cheers

    Tom,

One recent film that directly addresses almost all these issues is Whiplash.

Another is The Wolf of Wall Street, but there might be one or two issues you need to think through before using it!

Other recent films with which I've had success teaching motivation and related topics are:

    Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
    Another Earth
    The Life of Walter Mitty
    Departures (Okuribito)
    Her
    Beijing Bicycle
    The Hundred-Foot Journey
    The Intouchables
    Captain Phillips
    Human Resources (Ressources Humaines)
    Safety Not Guaranteed

And once it comes out on DVD/Blu-ray, I plan to use Nightcrawler.

    Hope this helps,

  • 23.  Videos etc for OB/HR classes

    Posted 04-01-2015 07:52

    Dear all,

What a very helpful and interesting discussion this has become! It has already helped me to further improve my HRM & OB course that I am currently teaching to first year Bachelor students. For example, yesterday I showed them Shawn Achor's TED talk and they really loved it.

One suggestion I don't think I have seen yet, is the RSA Animate series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL39BF9545D740ECFF. There are some really great videos here that students generally enjoy a lot. I have used the ones on motivation, re-imagining work, and dishonesty in my course and it provides the students with some nice eye openers. It's a real shame RSA doesn't seem to be uploading any new ones anymore as I really like these animated videos.

Finally, I also have a question to all of you. One of my lectures during the course is dedicated to negotiation, during which I tell my students about distributive versus integrative negotiation, and about "getting to yes". I have some brief videos that show the students how NOT to be an effective negotiator but I'm having a hard time finding a brief video that gives a good example of "following the rules" of negotiation (e.g., not being lured into anchoring too high, not falling into the trap of doing multiple concessions before the other party does one, etc.). Does anyone know some good videos that I could use for this? Many thanks in advance for the suggestions!

    All the best,

    Jos

I have also used the original 12 Angry men to teach about leadership, conflict styles, stages of team development (forming, storming, etc.), and influence tactics.

    Cheers

Thanks to all for your suggestions!  (And to any future ones yet to be made.)  At the request of several folks, I'll cumulate and organize the suggestions into a file and send them back to the listserve for any and all to use.  This should be a nice resource!

    Tom,

One recent film that directly addresses almost all these issues is Whiplash.

Another is The Wolf of Wall Street, but there might be one or two issues you need to think through before using it!

Other recent films with which I've had success teaching motivation and related topics are:

    Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
    Another Earth
    The Life of Walter Mitty
    Departures (Okuribito)
    Her
    Beijing Bicycle
    The Hundred-Foot Journey
    The Intouchables
    Captain Phillips
    Human Resources (Ressources Humaines)
    Safety Not Guaranteed

And once it comes out on DVD/Blu-ray, I plan to use Nightcrawler.

    Hope this helps,

Note: The results are based on responses of the participants on this list server and are not on official enrollments provided by the universities.

Some respondents wrote that for large sections they had more than one lecturer and additional TAs. Some also wrote that large sections were supplemented with "lab work" using teams of around 12-15 students. I excluded one response from Australia who said sections were around 200-400 and the students worked mostly outside of the lectures in small teams. I also excluded one response from a Russian University who wrote that the typical size was around 200, and one from India who wrote the typical size was 60-75.

    Hi Bob,

At Georgia Southern, typical class size for the Spring 2015 semester online is 40, FTF is 48.

This will change in the fall: FTF will be 150 (1 large section, as opposed to several smaller ones), online will be 45.

    Colleagues,

It looks like the "typical" class size is really a very local matter! This is the way it should be because class size depends on many factors –budgets, enrolment, whether it is a core class or an elective, etc. This is the way it should be. I am not looking forward to a national model for business programs, although AACSB has contributed much to this "ideal" model of business education!

    Thanks,

    Ivan

    All:

As Ivan says, responses seem to be influenced by local/institutional factors. I'm wondering if Bob's initial question - about the size of courses in ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR - might have been prompted by the nature of the subject matter. Regardless of institutional resource issues, should we not be concerned about the pedagogy here? Span of control, optimal group size for creative problem solving/diffusion of ideas/development of effective teams, might we not want to model the concepts we're teaching by designing learning environments that demonstrate best practices here? (I know, I know, rhetorical argument...)
Anyway, at my institution, Western CT State University, we purposely limit all management classes to 25. Any more than that makes it difficult to establish a cohesive culture in the classroom - assuming the objective is to engage in meaningful discussion...

Best Regards, Pauline Assenza, Associate Professor in Management, Ancell School of Business, WCSU

    Hi Bob,
At Babson College our undergraduate OB classes are typically capped at 40, brick & mortar only, and MBA at 60.

At Northern Illinois University, OB classes were capped at 35, all brick & mortar (I was there 2007-2011).

    Warmly,
    Wendy

Typical is hard to define. The  earliest morning sections may only have 30 some times. The later ones have over 50 (52).
We used to keep them around 30-35 in all sections, but budget constraints have caused admin. to increase class size.

    George Washington University

Until this academic year, our course was 150 students FTF once per week with 30 student break out sections, led by TAs.

This academic year, we shifted to 35 students (max)FTF.  As this is a core required course, the vast majority of sections will be at the 35 student capacity.

There was an error with Bellevue University. The correct number is 35 F2F and 24 online. My apologies.

Also a couple more responses came in since my original posting of the results, and they were added

to the list along with updated statistics. Thanks again to all who responded.

Some respondents wrote that for large sections they had more than one lecturer and additional TAs. Some also wrote that large sections were supplemented with "lab work" using teams of around 12-15 students. I excluded one response from a respondent in Australia who said sections were around 200-400 but the students worked mostly outside of the lectures in small teams. I also excluded one response from a Russian University who wrote the typical size was around 200 and one from India who wrote the typical size was 60-75.

This email has generated quite a list of useful films!

One other recommendation is the documentary Print the Legend, available from Netflix (info here)
The documentary provides an intimate view of the growth of the 3D printing industry.  It covers a lot of OB-related ground that we cover in our course, including business models, reacting to the external environment and competition, entrepreneurship, the struggles with organizational identity and organizational growth, social corporate responsibility and ethics, leadership, and so on.  The film could, in theory, be split pretty well into learning units. Highly recommended!
