  • 1.  Leadership Core Readings

    Posted 01-26-2008 06:28
    Colleagues,

    I was wondering if I might ask for your help.

    I am currently putting together a new edited collection of readings on the subject of leadership. The title of the book will be Discovering Leadership and the target market will be second year undergraduate students taking a course in Leadership, Influence and Change.

    The course is designed as an introduction to leadership and has eight sections, which are titled thus:

    * Defining Leadership
    * Leadership: Image or Substance
    * The Romance of Leadership
    * Followership
    * The Vision Thing
    * Inspiring Others
    * Gender Issues
    * Ethical Issues

    I want to produce a book that will have a wider readership than my own students and so I was wondering what articles you would like to see in such a book. I anticipate including three papers on each topic to provide the core reading of the course.

    I would be grateful for any suggestions for (already published) articles that you would regard as the core readings on a course such as this.

    Many thanks for taking the time to read this message and for your suggestions,

    Jon

    I would never address gender issues in leadership without the following article:

    Effects of sex and gender role on leader emergence

    Just a notion, but I have not seen anything on the cost of leadership - to
    the individual, the individual's family or society. Not all leaders have a
    positive effect on society or their organizations.

    Sandi is right. The production of followership, in particular over the
    short term, can and is achieved by the application of coercive methods.
    I know of no references for this. I have just begun my own research in
    client organizations to uncover some rough frequency information. This
    deserves more study.

    Regarding the costs to society of poor leadership, there is no better explication than Robert Hogan's Personality and the Fate of Organizations (Erlbaum, 2007).

    Subject: Leadership Core Readings

    * Defining Leadership
    * Leadership: Image or Substance
    * The Romance of Leadership
    * Followership
    * The Vision Thing
    * Inspiring Others
    * Gender Issues
    * Ethical Issues

    Jon
