    Hi,

I am teaching a course on "recruitment and selection" to undergraduate students during the winter session.  I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for in-class exercises, cases, or videos.  I am planning on spending some class time role-playing job interviews.

    Thanks!

    Manon,

At the risk of being labelled a self-publicist, could I suggest a book that I've just published? It is called Experiencing Recruitment and Selection and is published by Wiley. I suggest it because the main content of the book is more than 50 stories from people who have been involved in recruitment and selection, both as applicants and selectors. I've written a narrative to accompany the stories that brings out some of the key learning points. The stories are, generally, quite short and very engaging - such as the dentist who didn't have anywhere to interview so put the interviewee in the dentist's chair and interviewed her from behind!

It gets published in the States in early December, but is out in the UK now; amazon.co.uk stock it. If you want to get it and have problems getting hold of a copy and I'll send you some page proofs of topics you're interested in.

I have asked students to ask their employer (or their parents' employer, etc) for either an explanation of or the actual pre-employment tests that are used. We then as a class discuss their validity in predicting job success for the position for which the tests are used. It's an interesting exercise that they dread at first because they have to do a little work to obtain the information, but the exercise leads to some interesting conversations not only about validity, but also about rights, the need for testing, self-discovery, etc. Good luck.
