Another thing I do is to have students watch the films "What the Bleep do We
Know" and "Mindwalk." Both help them to open their minds which is one of the
keys for diversity.

Rosadlind,
One thing I enjoy the most out of teaching courses such as Org. Behavior,
Cross-Cultural Management, International Management, and some workshops on
cultural diversity is that the stuff we cover in them is about us! You
probably have a rich source of diversity exercises in your own classroom, in
popular publications (New York Times, Business Week, etc.) which report and
cover current events in management and organization, and other sources. I
have, for instance, video clips from the newsmagazine 60 Minutes (CBS),
where issues such as the Texas 10% Rule for College Admission, France's
General Treatment of its Muslim Population, etc. If you want to get some
ideas on how to convert all of these sources (your own students and the
events in real life), check Storti's Cross-Cultural Dialogues,
Intercultural Press, Yarmouth, Maine, 1990 (0r 1991). The essence of what I
try to do is to get my students to understand that they are an active part
of that diversity, to understand they affect and are affected by others
around them.
Hope this helps a little bit,
Ivan

Hello Rosalind,
There's quite a selection of diversity exercises described in articles in
the Journal of Management Education as recent as August 2007.
Cheers,
Celeste

Dear colleagues,
I am helping to design a course on managing diversity within
organizations, and am looking for experiential exercises to use
during
the course. Currently, I have divided the course into the following
topics:
1. What is diversity?
2. Costs and Benefits of Diversity
3. Privilege and Power
4. Recruiting for Diversity
5. Retaining a Diverse Workforce
6. Marketing Diversity - Inside and outside of the organization
7. Conflict Resolution
8. Cross National Diversity
If you have any recommendations for experiential exercises that
could be
used that involve these topics, I would greatly appreciate it. Cases
or
videos are fine too.
Also, if there are any other topics that I should consider adding to
the
course, please let me know as well.
I will summarize results for the listserv. Thank you in advance!
