  • 1.  PREVENTION: [OB-LIST] Workplace Violence Question

    Dan

I don't know about the legal question exactly (thought been expert in sexual assault case) but do know about prevention.

Prevention is the name of the game and Gavin de Becker makes a powerful case for the predictability of violence, including workplace.

We set up public health surveillance systems, including supervisor and employee reporting, at our largest USAF logistics depot 1995-2001.

Prevented all workplace violence and all suicides.  De Becker's THE GIFT OF FEAR is a great source of information.  My students benefit.

    Subject: [OB-LIST] Workplace Violence Question

    OB colleagues,

An interesting question came up in class that I'd like you to weigh in on: In circumstances where there are indications of potential workplace violence, what are the obligations of employees to report to work functions related as violence becomes more of a threat*? What is the legal responsibility of the employer to acknowledge the threat, announce it, and other elements of maintaining employee safety?

*"Violence is a process, as well as an act. Violent behavior does not occur in a vacuum. Careful analysis of violent incidents shows that violent acts often are the culmination of long-developing, identifiable trails of problems, conflicts, disputes, and failures." From OPM Threat Assessment-http://www.opm.gov/Employment_and_Benefits/WorkLife/OfficialDocuments/handbooksguides/WorkplaceViolence/p3-s2.asp#threat

    Thanks,

    Dan

    HI Dan,

At UVA we are required to report to our Assistant Dean of Student Affairs any incident which or student who gives off the slightest indication of potential violence.  As you might imagine, we are sensitive about this now in Virginia. The Assistant Dean has been trained to manage the system thereafter.
