As a text, I would recommend "Performance Management" by Herman Aguinis. The book is up to date and has a good blend of an applied approach and empirical support.

Good luck with planning your course.

    Ranjeet,

Any performance management course, I believe, must include some of the ideas from W. Edwards Deming, the quality guru, who introduced the notion that 80% percent of the performance problems are due to something management does or does not do. One of his first books, "Out of the Crisis," was published in the 1980's but it is still very valid. I personally discuss in my classes the notion that workers and employees for the most part work under a system and follow processes designed and implemented by management. So with the exception of disciplinary problems, employee performance is the result of the system and processes in place (Myron Tribus used to write about this). So performance problems could the result of system's flaws, or poorly conceived processes, of management's failure to match the individuals' skills and abilities to the requirements of the job (selection, training and re-training, motivation mechanisms, etc.). So I would recommend to check Deming's Fourteen Points. They are still very valid.

    Thanks,

    Ivan Blanco
