I was wondering if colleagues might be able to help me.

I've been tasked with designing a new leadership course for undergraduates and I'm looking for a suitable textbook. As my audience will include a lot of non-business students, I want to find a textbook that has a generic, rather than a business or management, approach.

I've already discovered the excellent book by Shriberg, Shriberg and Lloyd (which is a little too short for my needs) and the various books by Grint (which are fantastic but at too high a level).

If anyone could point me in the direction of any suitable texts, I'd be really grateful.

    Jon,

I have found the following to be quite good. Besides good coverage of basic and more recent leadership perspectives and theories, it has good mini-cases and other good activities, as well as an instructor guide.

Northouse, P. G. (2004). Leadership: Theory and practice (3rd edition). Thousand Oaks: Sage.

    Hi Jon,

You may want to check out the chapter on leadership in my second management book, Hidden Assets: Harnessing the Power of Informal Networks--Springer, 2005 (www.UnManagement.com). It takes a more "human nature" focused approach on leadership.

    Cheers,

We use the Daft's book Experiencing Leadership along with the Wren reader, The Leader's Companion. I have also used Northouse's text and Yukl also has an excellent text. Next year we will be integrating some classic cases from literature into the course as well.

I was just looking at a book by Dubrin called Leadership: Research Findings, Practice and Skills and published by Houghton Mifflin. For undergrads I particular like the exercises and surveys in it that help them think about their own leadership skills and potential.

    Jon,

I agree with Marie. I am using DuBrin's "Leadership" for the fall 2007. In addition to cases and self-experiential exercises, I have liked videotapes as well.

I have been following this thread and wonder whether Fairtlough's 'The Three Ways of Getting Things Done: Hierarchy, Heterarchy and Responsible Autonomy in Organizations' might be of interest when evaluating leadership texts? You can see more about this title at: http://triarchypress.co.uk/pages/book4.htm

    Hope this is useful.

You might consider Northouse's "Leadership" or Kouzes and Posner's
    "Leadership Challenege".
