• 1. Three-Paper / Essay Dissertation Model Guidelines

    Posted 05-09-2007 19:14

    Hello,

I am interested in undertaking the three-paper essay model as my dissertation, but I need more information before I can present a convincing argument to my committee. If you (as an advisor) or your department allow for the three-paper model dissertation, would you mind sharing your guidelines or checklist with me? I am curious as to 'how it's done' at other universities, and whether it is something I can adapt for my dissertation.

Thank you in advance for your help; I really appreciate any assistance and advice.

    Cheers,

    Silvia

    Dear Silvia,

I used the 3 paper approach for my dissertation at Stanford.

The way it worked was that I partitioned my work into three sections. These are the papers I published with my advisors from my dissertation:

In addition to these papers, I had to write a "Wrapper", which was an introduction and conclusion. The introduction overviewed the whole of my dissertation research and introduced the papers. The conclusion summarized the contributions to theory and practice.

Like most alternatives, there are advantages and disadvantages. Most are obvious, like having three papers ready to go shortly after you defend. I defended Spring 2002 and had my first article in 2003.

I think that the first important factor is whether your School and/or Advisors allow you to do this.

Hope this provides you with a quick overview. Happy to share more with anyone interested.

Best wishes for a parsimonious and fruitful dissertation!

    Warm regards,
    Roxanne

    Dear Silvia,

We use this model now more often than in the past. At my school we borrowed it from economics, but we have used it since the 1950's. There are no specific guidelines, but when I have chaired a committee supervising a three essay thesis, I view each essay as a self-contained paper equivalent to a journal quality submission. The three papers should have some common thread, but the thread could be very abstract. In the several theses I supervised with 3 essays, at least two of the essays were empirical. If a paper has been submitted to or accepted by a journal or conference, it is still acceptable as part of a three essay thesis.

I strongly advocate this form for the following reasons. (1) We generally write journal articles, so the essay is already in the form where it can readily be sent out for submission to a journal. This helps move the student's career along more rapidly. (2) A long dissertation is a form we will never use again, so learning to do one gives you little help in composing future written work, since no other writing (book, monograph or article) is like a thesis. Therefore, essays allow you to practice a skill you will use repeatedly the rest of your career.

    Good luck,

    Mark Fichman
