    Posted 05-05-2007 09:44
    Colleagues,

I'm interested in obtaining some secure software that will enable me to gather survey research online from participants worldwide. I would like to embed the software on my website and give participants access via a one-time or multiple-time password.

Do any of you know of any programs that could do this without requiring a second mortgage or a degree in computer science?

    Many thanks,

    Bruce

    I echo Silvia's remarks.

Programs such as SurveyMonkey.com can, for a monthly fee ($20) let you integrate the survey into your website by allowing color customization, logos, etc. You can provide a link to the survey from your own site (though this would not be connected to the individual participants), or you can generate email invitations within the SurveyMonkey application which will have custom URLs that let you know who has responded. You can also set it to return to your website after the survey is completed (the default is to return to the SurveyMonkey.com site). These features are not provided with the free membership. I found SurveyMonkey to be better than Zoomerang.

We had a lot of success with a survey that was initiated with a letter that included an ID number. My RA (who was adept at basic Java programming) set up a simple HTML page that fed the ID number into the survey so that we knew who had responded via that page. Later, we sent an email reminder from within SurveyMonkey and that took care of identifying the rest of the respondents. We had to manually check off the people who had responded via our web page with their ID number, which made it easy for us to send reminders to only the people who had not responded via SurveyMonkey's email generation feature.

    Hi Bruce

I can certainly recommend Unipark. It is a tool that I have been using for
three years now and which meets all my wishes. Features are superior to
everything I have seen so far and pricing is awesome. I guess they see
academia more of an entry into the coporate market (for which the fees are a
    lot higher): http://www.unipark.info/60-1-licenses.htm

Also, I have attachd a list which has been gathered through the Social Psych
Listserver about half a year ago. That should save some time.

    All the best

    Hello, Bruce.

My favorite is Survey Monkey.  It's about $19.95 per month, month-to-month.  Unlimited questions per survey.  They have templates you can use or you can create your own.  Once to finish creating your survey, they give you a web address that you include in your email message or web page..  Here is their page on pricing and features (http://www.surveymonkey.com/Pricing.asp.

    Bruce,

Try www.openpsy.org. It is an open source effort much cheaper than the brand name web-based programs, easy to use, and offers bibliographic and statistical software packages to boot. The back end is taken care of so there is no need for programming knowledge.

Here is a brief video introduction (and an example of an embedded link):

I also use the software (all of it) in my undergraduate and graduate research courses.

It's been a few years since I used it, however, Inquisite
http://www.inquisite.com was a wonderful tool that had academic pricing. I
first learned of them from the Academy for Human Resource Development at one
of their conferences. Like one of the other vendors that was mentioned, they
started by serving the faculty research community and then expanded into
    commercial clients.
