Jeanine, for leadership I use three kits composed of incompatible "tinker toys" (from different manufacturers) that will be used to build towers by teams of students.  Prior to the exercise I take the team leaders aside and recruit them as confederates.  One will act as a "democratic" theory y leader, the other an "autocratic" x leader and a third will be a "laissez faire" or uncaring leader.  Towers are built with goals of height, sturdiness and aesthetics.  Invariably the democratic team wins demonstrating the importance of leadership type in creative work.

This is not my invention, by the way.  I was introduced to this method by Dr. Mary Crow at the University of Texas at Arlington.

    Dear OB Colleagues,

I thought you might have some suggestions for experiential activities that have worked well for you on any topic in OB, especially those that pertain to job satisfaction, motivation, leadership, group dynamics, culture, perception or personality.

I'd be happy to compile a list and send out to the group. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thank you very much,

    Jeanine
