No explanations here, but there is an excellent case written by Jack Gabarro
that was originally "Robert F. Kennedy High School' and has been republished
by HBS as Thurgood Marshall High School. At the time the case was written,
the school was a 'new concept' urban school in which students were grouped
in smaller 'houses' within the broader campus. There is a clear matrix
organization between housemasters and academic department heads. A new
principal has the job of restoring order to the place, including resolving
many disputes across the matrix, racial tension, security problems, etc.
