OB folks!

My colleague and I conducted fieldwork on knowledge work in both Sweden and US on how media was adopted in team projects. We discovered some interesting patterns around the nature of the message being transmitted. That is, depending on the sensitivity of the message (discussion personal conflict, performance issues, competence, lack of commitment) that could impact the dynamics in the team, members adopted different media. We are unable to locate any relevant literature on this topic. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers!

I suggest to look at the Networks and Organizations (1990) book edited by Nitin Nohria and Robert Eccles. Their paper discusses just what you found: email is used for coordination while face-to-face communication tends to be used for problem solving.
