    Dear all,

I am Yan Li, a PhD student in the department of managment at Chinese University of Hong Kong. I will collect pilot data for my dissertation soon. I am thinking that some social value or career value might be helpful to provide additional explanation on my study. Since I am not familiar with this area and the time is tight, I write this email for help and look forward to getting suggestions on the measurements of social value or career value, in particular the categories of social or career value. I will appreciate it very much.

    Best Regards,
    Yan

    Dear Yan,

There's a special issue of JAB in Asisn manager's career behaviors, career
values is a key construct in those papers. You might want to take a look.

    Good luck on your research.

Here is a great book that may be of value to you:

Fields, D. L. (2002). Taking the measure of work: a guide to validated scales for organizational research and diagnosis. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications.

The book has many measurement scales for various workplace issues including workplace values. It is available from Amazon.com. Good Luck.

    Dear Yan,

One alternative is the work value survey that Liz Ravlin and I developed (the CES). It uses an ipsative (as opposed to normative) measurement methodology, which we prefer for reasons that are outlined in our 1998 review of values research in Journal of Management.

You can find a copy of the CES and associated materials such as the scoring key on my web page. The address appears in the signature below. Be sure to read the document "Use of the Comparative Emphasis Scale" as it contains important information on the use and characteristics of the scale.
