I am looking for published work on congruence/discrepancies between
managerial beliefs and behaviours. Can you suggest any references?

    Many thanks

    Good afternoon Alex,

If I understand your inquiry correctly, I would offer the work of Cialdini
et al. (2001) on injunctive and descriptive norms.

They offer a distinction between of what people typically approve versus
    what is typically done.

    Citation:

Cialdini, Kallgren, and Reno (1991) A focus theory on normative conduct. In
Advances in Experimental Social Psychology (ed: Zanna, 24:201-34. San Diego,
    CA: Academic.

Best of luck on your research.

    Best regards,

    Alex,
You might begin with a 2008 article that was published in Journal of Management Inquiry:
Acting at Work: Facades of Conformity in Academia
    Flora Stormer and Kay Devine

Their reference list also provides some potential leads.

Alex, The knowing-doing gap: How smart companies turn knowledge into action, by Jeffrey Pfeffer & Robert Sutton (2000) is one that I highly recommend.  It was published by the Harvard Business School Press.

    Good luck!

    Alex,

I'd recommend Argyris' distinction between espoused theories and
theories-in-use in either of the below references:

    Argyris, C., & Schön, D. A. (1978). Organizational learning: A theory
of action perspective. Reading, MA: Addison-Wesley.

    Argyris, C., Putnam, R. & Smith, D.M. (1985). Action science:
Concepts, methods, and skills for research and intervention. San
    Francisco: Jossey-Bass.

Argyris, C. and Schön, D. (1996) Organizational learning II: Theory,
method and practice. Reading, MA: Addison Wesley

    Good luck!

    Ryan

    Alex,
Goffman's "Presentation of Self in Everyday Life" (if I remember the title correctly) is somewhat foundational for incongruent beliefs/behaviors.
The best public/popular source would be on the public mission vs. private life of past New York Attorney General Elliot Spitzer!

You may want to check out Tony Simons's work on behavioral integrity, as
well as his new book on the subject: http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/tls11/

I've just published my own book which has some bearing on congruence between
rhetoric and behavior as well: Trust is Everything -- Become the Leader
Others Will Follow. It's practitioner-oriented, but builds on scholarly
    research on trust.

More information about the book can be found at:

    Alex,

You may want to check out the literature on integrity, as various aspects of
congruence are often conceptualized as integrity. The following article has
an extensive literature review that you will find to be helpful:

    Palanski, M.E., & Yammarino, F.J. (2007). Integrity and leadership:
Clearing the conceptual confusion. European Management Journal, 25,
    171-184.

    Best wishes,

    Mike Palanski
