    Dear Netters,

I'm looking for studies on unintended negative consequences of
organizational efforts to manage diversity and diversity training
programs. Is anyone aware of such studies? Thank you all in advance.

    Pinar,

You may be interested in the research on stereotype suppression and its consequences:

Bodenhausen, G. V. & Macrae, C. N. 1996. The self-regulation of intergroup perception: Mechanisms and consequences of stereotype suppression. In C. N. Macrae & N. Stangor & M. Hewstone (Eds.), Stereotypes and Stereotyping. New York: The Guilford Press.

Macrae, C. N., Bodenhausen, G. V., Milne, A. B., & Wheeler, V. 1996. On resisting the temptation for simplification: Counterintentional effects of stereotype suppression on social memory. Social Cognition, 14(1): 1-20.

Two streams come quickly to mind --

    1) strong series of studies by Madeline Heilman and her research team at NYU during the 1990s on potential attributional biases that may follow from proactive diversity programming, under certain conditions. Have forgotten the exact cites but would check databases that include Academy journals and the Journal of Applied Psychology.

    2) much vaguer on this, but a check of the web sites might be productive -- it seems to me that 18 months or so ago, the National Urban League reported on a series of surveys on differences in attitudinal responses between exempt and non-exempt employees on the intentions and effectiveness of corporate diversity initiatives. Wish I could remember more. I was reminded of it when a student in a seminar the other evening mentioned it.

Kravitz. I am not certain when the issue will be in print. You may wish to
check with Myrtle mpbell@uta.edu This issue may prove useful for the
training aspect of your very interesting topic.

    Best wishes,

Here are the responses to "managing diversity" thread:

John Hollwitz recommended the following research streams:

    1) strong series of studies by Madeline Heilman and her research team
at NYU during the 1990s on potential attributional biases that may
follow from proactive diversity programming, under certain conditions.

    2) The National Urban League surveys on differences in attitudinal
responses between exempt and non-exempt employees on the intentions
and effectiveness of corporate diversity initiatives. Wish I could
    remember more.

Corinne Post suggested the research on stereotype suppression and its
    consequences:

    Bodenhausen, G. V. & Macrae, C. N. 1996. The self-regulation of
intergroup perception: Mechanisms and consequences of stereotype
    suppression. In C. N. Macrae & N. Stangor & M. Hewstone (Eds.),
Stereotypes and Stereotyping. New York: The Guilford Press.

    Macrae, C. N., Bodenhausen, G. V., Milne, A. B., & Wheeler, V. 1996.
On resisting the temptation for simplification: Counterintentional
effects of stereotype suppression on social memory. Social Cognition,
    14(1): 1-20.

Mustafa F. Ozbilgin recommended Academy of Management Learning and
Education’s special issue on Diversity Education and Training, guest
edited by Myrtle P Bell and David Kravitz.

Arthur Brief recommended a review by Kulik and Roberson in
Brief's(2008) Diversity at Work book published by Cambridge.

Finally, two working papers were recommended:

    Goncalo, J. A., Chatman, J. A., & Duguid, M. M. “On the Unintended
Consequences of Political Correctness in Work Groups.” Working paper
    at Cornell University.

    Bezrukova , K. , Joshi, A. & Jehn, K. A. “Diversity Training Research
in Organizational Settings: A Theoretical Review and Integration.”
Paper presented at the Society for Industrial and Organizational
Psychology. (I don't have the year)

Thanks very much to those who responded.

    Best.

    Pinar
