  • 1.  Measure of Interdependence

    Posted 02-20-2007 16:49

    Dear fellow colleagues,

I'm trying to find a measure that is based on Thompson's (1967) notions of sequential, pooled, reciprocal interdependence. They are conceptually different, but I'm searching for a quantitative measure for these types of interdependence. Any help in pointing me in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

Niclas, I am doing some work in leadership on a number of dualities, including interdependence.  I would appreciate you sharing a reference regarding Thompson's (1967) work.

Hi Niclas. I'd be interested in what people respond with, because I hope to manipulate and/or measure interdependence along these lines as well.
Pearce & Gregerson (1991) actually do try to create a measure with Thompson (1967) in mind. The complete reference is Pearce, J.L., & Gregerson, H.B. 1991. Task interdependence and extrarole behavior: a test of the mediating effects of felt responsibility. Journal of Applied Psychology, (76) 6, 838-844.
Work by Gerben Van der Vegt and Ruth Wageman (separately) may also be helpful when looking at interdependence. I'm only now starting to look into this myself, so I'd love to know more on what you find/are doing- JP

    Hi Niclas,

I?m also interested in the measurement of task interdependence, specifically
in the field of work teams. I?ve used Van der Vegt et al.?s (2001) task
interdependence scale in some studies, but this measure does not distinguish
between types of interdependence. It captures the general level of
interdependence as perceived by team members. I believe it does not capture
    the complexities of interdependence.

I?d love you inform me about the results of your search.

    Best regards,
    Miriam Sanchez-Manzanares
