Who:
Donatella Della Porta is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center on Social Movement Studies at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Florence, Italy. Her research focuses on social movements, political violence, terrorism, corruption, and protest policing. She has authored over 100 books and received numerous awards, including the 2024 John D. McCarthy Award for Lifetime Achievement in Social Movements Scholarship. [joining online]
Frank de Bakker is Professor of Business & Society at IÉSEG School of Management in Lille, France. His research focuses on business and society interactions, particularly examining how activist groups engage with firms, their strategies and tactics for institutional change around corporate social responsibility, and how firms respond to these challenges.
Mary-Hunter (Mae) McDonnell is Associate Professor of Management at the University of Pennsylvania, USA. Her research examines organizational behavior within challenging institutional contexts, particularly focusing on political interactions between corporations and their stakeholders. She studies how company-stakeholder interactions shape corporate social activity and how stakeholders enforce social norms for corporations.
Htwe Htwe Thein is Associate Professor in International Business at Curtin University, Australia. Her interdisciplinary research examines responsible business practices in developing countries, with particular expertise on Myanmar's business and economic development. As part of the Burmese diaspora, she supports the pro-democracy movement, most recently by advocating for sanctions against businesses that support the military regime.
Jannick Friis Christensen is an activist and Lead Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Engagement Partner at the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, Denmark. With a PhD in Diversity Management, he focuses on LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion and corporate-Pride partnerships. His activism centers on challenging pinkwashing and promoting authentic organizational diversity and inclusion practices.
Elaine Siu is an animal welfare activist and PhD student at King's College London, UK. She has held leadership positions at multiple non-profits working to transform industrial animal agriculture, including as Managing Director of Good Food Institute Asia Pacific and Chief Innovation Officer of Material Innovation Initiative. Her research examines industry incubation for sustainable alternatives, building on her social venturing and advocacy work.
Sara Soderstrom (Discussion and Q&A Moderator) is Associate Professor in Organizational Studies & Program in the Environment at University of Michigan, USA. Her research examines how organizations develop solutions to global sustainability challenges, particularly studying how individuals mobilize others and build coalitions to implement sustainability initiatives.
