Friends and colleagues headed to Chicago,

We are thrilled to bring back the Speaking Science PDW for a third (and potentially final!) year.
The PDW-sponsored by the OB Division in partnership with Daniels School of Business at Purdue University and Carlson School of Management at University of Minnesota and organized by the Making Connections Committee as a special topics session-focuses on building the necessary science communications skills for researchers in our field to actively and successfully share our research with important broader non-academic audiences. In 2022, we-Kate Zipay (Purdue University), Beth Campbell (University of Minnesota), Theresa Glomb (University of Minnesota) and now welcoming Brandon Fogel (University of Nebraska) and Lauren Locklear (Texas Tech University)-developed this program to encourage ourselves and other scholars to practice the art of science communications. It has been a big hit the last two years and we are so excited to return for AOM 2024.

We are, once more, partnering with professional improvisation coaches (writer, corporate, trainer, and Second City Chicago directors and alum extraordinaire) based in Chicago to lead this session. In this 3-hour session, we will cover several key skills in effective science communication including:

    • crafting a story, eliminating jargon, and honing in on the focal ideas
    • identifying and tailoring the story to your audience
    • gaining insights from communication and improvisation experts along the way.

The session will couple best practices in media communications with relevant theater improvisation skills to provide participants with opportunities to learn and practice the importance of science communication and experience the value of communicating their research to non-expert audiences.

The PDW is scheduled for Friday, August 9th, from 1:00pm-4:00pm

If you're interested and available, we'd love for you to come. For past attendees, the program will have new content so we encourage you to return! Owing to its interactive format, the session is capped at 100 participants. Register soon to secure a spot: https://unlcba.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3F8SVNjZTcSgBdc

It will be fun, engaging, and challenging-especially in the birthplace of improv! We are confident it will be a highlight of your Academy, and we would love for you to be a part of it with us!
