Create a Better World with Better Data: A Workshop on Scale Development and Validation Best Practices (session 304)
In all scientific fields, accurate measurement of the constructs studied is critical to the advancement of knowledge. Over the years, multiple reviews have criticized research in management for a general lack of attention to construct measurement validity, with particular criticism of survey measurement scales. We believe this criticism is accurate, and hope to improve the state of our field by providing researchers a simple, psychometrically-sound programmatic approach to help them establish construct validity for new scales (and evaluate the validity of existing scales). The first half of the session will focus on establishing a general understanding of construct validity as well as best practice approaches to evaluating construct validity. The second half of the session will be "hands-on", conducted in small break-out groups, providing participants the opportunity to apply this information and work on their own measures as well as the ability to pose questions to facilitators.
