  • 1.  Incoming Editor of Journal of Management - Call for Applications/Nominations

    Posted 02-25-2025 11:27

Along with Guest Editors Dong Liu, Albert Cannella, Jr., Amy Hillman, Scott Seibert, and Michael Tushman, I am happy to announce the publication of our "This is an Eventful Era" special issue in the Journal of Management (https://journals.sagepub.com/toc/joma/51/3).

In addition to our introductory article, the special issue contains an exceptional set of articles that examine many different discrete events such as everyday change events, crises, organizational downsizing, mergers, corporate scandals, technology implementations, product launches, trade wars, and protests. Using diverse methodologies and analytic techniques, these papers draw from a wide range of research domains, including human resource management, organizational behavior, organizational theory, and strategic management. Their findings demonstrate the interesting ways discrete events disrupt routines, prompt adaptation, and impact individual and collective behaviors across various levels within organizations, pointing to the transformative role of discrete events in fostering changes at different organizational levels. We hope you enjoy these articles and that they inspire you to conduct your own event-oriented research. Below is the list of articles and direct links to each one. Apologies for cross-postings.

    Information for Candidates

The Journal of Management (http://jom.sagepub.com) is among the elite journals in the field of management. With a
citation impact factor of 9.3, Journal of Management ranks among the top five management journals. As a Financial Times top 50 journal, Journal of Management publishes impactful theoretical and empirical papers within the areas of business strategy and policy, entrepreneurship, human resource management, organizational behavior, organizational theory, and research methods, and offers a thriving Annual Review issue with a competitive peer-reviewed proposal process. JOM receives over 1500 manuscript submissions per year and is highly selective in the articles it publishes. JOM also has a partner journal, the Journal of Management Scientific Reports (JOMSR), focused on replication and theory testing. The editors of JOM and JOMSR coordinate some activities at the SMA and AOM annual meetings.

Serving as Editor requires committed time, good management skills, and prior editorial experience. SMA, which is the governing body for this journal, has worked to reduce the administrative burden by providing resources in conjunction with our publisher, Sage. The Journal of Management and SMA have historically benefitted from a cooperative arrangement between the Association, Sage Publishing, and the Editor’s home institution, which collectively provide the resources needed to run a top journal. Sage Publishing provides a team and support, including:
    o A production editor
    o A marketing manager
    o Peer review technology specialists
    o Editorial assistants
    o Copy editors
o Support for editorial “calibration” meetings with associate editors

SMA is pleased to provide generous stipends to the Editor-in-Chief and the editorial team they select. SMA also provides a sizable budget to be distributed as deemed appropriate by the Editor. This could be used to support/supplement items such as but not limited to:
    o Travel expenses
o Local staff salaries (RAs, admin staff)
    o Furniture, computer equipment
    o Board member gifts
    o Event sponsorship

SMA also provides additional resources beyond the Editor’s operating budget:
o Funds for the editorial board meetings and receptions at the Academy of Management and SMA.
    o Associate Editor Honoraria
o Support for editorial “calibration” meetings with associate editors
o Support for public relations specialist work with editors and authors to promote the journal
Support from one’s home institution is also seen as necessary for the success of the journal. In the past,
support has come in the form of:
o A research assistant to serve as managing editor
    o Administrative support
o A teaching reduction for each year of the editorial term
    o Summer salary

    To apply:
Candidates should electronically apply in PDF format with:
    1. A current curriculum vitae,
    2. A maximum five-page letter of interest providing:
    a. A statement of goals for the journal that includes any proposed changes or innovations,
    b. A discussion of how the journal’s processes would be organized and managed, including details about consulting editors, associate editors, or other alternative structures if appropriate,
    c. Identify previous organization/management experience, technology expertise, editorial experience,
    d. Discuss the financial support provided by the host institution,
    e. Discuss your willingness and ability to travel to represent the journal at universities, workshops, and conferences. This should be a generalized plan to serve as ambassador for the journal, and
    3. A letter from their Department Chair or Dean certifying the level and amount of support that their institution will provide.

These materials need to be received by the search committee no later than 5:00 PM EST, May 2, 2025.
Please submit all application materials via e-mail to tmunyon@utk.edu.

SMA welcomes applications from underrepresented scholars in academia.
