Dear colleagues,
We are delighted to invite you to our upcoming AOM symposium:
Paradoxes and Surprises Surrounding Motivation and Work Orientations
(Session #21322)
Sunday, July 27 | 10:15–11:45 AM
Bella Center, Hall C – C3-m13
Why do well-intentioned motives-such as intrinsic and prosocial motivation-sometimes backfire? Why might extrinsic motivation, often viewed with suspicion, serve a constructive purpose? And how do individuals navigate shifting work orientations in a rapidly evolving world of work? This symposium brings together five empirical papers that explore the tensions, tradeoffs, and surprising consequences of different motivational orientations. Our goal is to spark new conversations about the moral, psychological, and organizational complexities surrounding motivation and meaningful work.
Presentations include:
- 'Et tu, Brute?' Managers Respond More Negatively When Employees with High Intrinsic Motivation Decline Additional Work - Sangah Bae (Cornell U.)
- Not in It for the Money: How Employers Penalize Prosocial Motivation Signals in Social Impact Contexts - Katie Chen, Rachel Arnett, & Amy Wrzesniewski (The Wharton School)
- Harnessing Narcissistic Employees' Work Meaning: The Role of Supervisors' Extrinsic Motivation Display in Enhancing Narcissistic Employees' Workplace Outcomes - Mijeong Kwon (Rice U.), Katherine Bae (U. of Illinois Chicago), & Tony Kong (U. of Colorado Boulder)
- Shadows of an Immoral Maker: Reinterpreting the Meaningfulness of Others' Work Following Moral Taint - Laura Sonday (U. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)
- An Examination of the Phenomenon of Multiple Work Orientations Among Teachers - Hayuta Yinon (Oranim Academic College of Education)
- At the end of symposium, Dr. Marylène Gagné will lead a rich and insightful discussion to connect and inspire presenters and audiences.
We look forward to seeing you in Copenhagen!
Warm regards,
Mijeong Kwon (Organizer)
