How will artificial intelligence (AI) reshape scientific inquiry and the publication process?

Scott Tonidandel, George Banks, and I got together to ask ourselves that question. What could the future of (social) science with a particular emphasis on leadership look like when we take seriously the promises of AI? At the same time, we also wanted to openly engage with the challenges and distill what we think a good balance would look like. And why stop there? We took it further and probed what could publishing look like, and what new opportunities are there for dissemination.

We hope you find our reflections useful... maybe for yourself or maybe to be discussed in a research seminar with PhD students. Find our article here (open access): https://doi.org/10.1016/j.leaqua.2025.101895

Needless to say, we practice what we preach and have used AI extensively to write our piece (see our author note).

Speaking of, we also produced a podcast with AI (notebookLM) so you can listen to the contents of the article rather than having to read through it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E02ElM4nPEk

And last, this goes together with a selection of "AI tools for the academic workflow": https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mb4SWtqyi1iEGCn2uTnHkPHqW3UoQr8b0xv5_81a-4Y/edit?usp=sharing

As we conclude in the paper "What role remains for humans in a future shaped by AI? The same one that has always mattered most: to ask better questions, to resist easy answers, and to keep alive the reflective, critical, and imaginative spirit that turns information into insight. The opportunity-and the responsibility-rests with us."

Curious to hear what you think.
