We are looking to grow the organising team for a planned PDW at the 2023 Academy of Management Meeting in Boston.
The working title of the workshop is 'Being a successful and authentic introvert in the academy' and we are looking for both organisers and speakers. More detail is below, feel free to contact me if you're interested in helping to develop it further.
Introverts in academia can sometimes feel at a disadvantage in a world that seems to be geared towards extroverts. This world demands we network, collaborate with multiple new people, be outgoing, energetic and charismatic in our teaching, promote our research, and sell ourselves in a competitive job market – things that can sometimes feel like anathema to introverts. Yet to be towards the introversion end of the continuum can be a great asset for academics; introverts are able to spot research gaps that others miss, reflect, make great listeners, and can use deeper conversations to forge strong links.
The aim of this PDW is to identify and develop the ways in which introverts can be successful in academia by harnessing their strengths as an introvert and being agile and flexible in how they approach the myriad tasks needed to 'get on' in academia.
The PDW will focus on helping participants develop their understanding and skills in:
- Networking and getting the most out of conferences (including AoM).
- Collaboration in research and beyond
- Academic Leadership
- Education and teaching
- Career development
- Research skills
