Demystifying Theory Development and Publication: How to Write a Theory Paper and Where to Submit It
Professional Development Workshop (PDW), Academy of Management 2024 Annual Meeting, Friday, August 9, 2024 11:30AM-1:00PM (UTC -5)
Do you have an idea for a theory paper but aren't sure where to start, or a theory draft that's not moving forward? Do you worry about finding a high-impact journal that will publish your theory piece? Writing and publishing theoretical work can be challenging, and high-impact journals that publish theory pieces may seem scarce. If this resonates, this PDW is for you! This session will provide insights on developing and refining ideas for theoretical work, planning and writing the paper, navigating the review process, and publishing in various theory outlets.
In the first half of the session, editors Sherry Thatcher, Caroline Gattrell, and Lamar Pierce from Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, and Organization Science, will discuss the role of theory papers in their respective journals. During the second half, participants will engage in roundtable discussions with authors of theory papers recently published in a variety of top management journals.
    Roundtable hosts:
    • Christine Bataille (Ithaca College)
    • Jeff Bednar (Brigham Young University)
    • Erika Hall (Emory University)
    • Astrid Homan (University of Amsterdam)
    • Nadine Kammerlander (WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management)
