The PDW will take place on Friday, August 9, 2024, from 11:15 AM to 1:45 PM ET at Sheraton Grand Hotel Chicago (Ballroom I).
We welcome participants from various career stages and research communities, whether experienced in Open Innovation studies or new to the topic, to engage in inspiring discussions and connect with a vibrant community. Prior knowledge of Open Innovation is not required.

Open innovation (OI) is a management concept that describes the purposive management of knowledge flows across organizational boundaries. It has attracted significant attention from management researchers and has been studied using a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives. At the same time, researchers in a growing number of disciplines and divisions are attracted to this domain. And while our understanding of OI is generally increasing, many challenges in researching OI remain and new ones emerge.
The first version of this PDW was organized in 2014, and the earlier PDWs have resulted in a publication (with twenty-three involved authors) in Industry & Innovation https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13662716.2016.1240068.
As we start the third decade of Open Innovation, this year's PDW at the Academy of Management marks its tenth edition and a special milestone by exploring the evolution and future of OI. As this PDW continues to be a cornerstone for fostering knowledge exchange, and bridging theoretical insights with practical applications, this year, we delve deeper into the realm of OI, with a focus on four key domains: OI and theory development, OI and new methodologies, OI phenomena, and OI practice. As always, this PDW gathers a large number of very experienced and active scholars conducting research related to OI. These scholars will share and build on their experiences in researching OI to identify some key challenges—and associated opportunities—to help advance research in this domain. The facilitators will introduce and discuss these challenges, which cover a broad range of levels of analysis, various theoretical perspectives, and methodological approaches. Following this, they will moderate roundtable discussions with interested participants.
