We extended the deadline to submit proposals for the 2-day workshop on
The role of power and powerholders in organizations: Building bridges between psychology and management

    When: July 18-19, 2019
    Where: ETH Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland

Power has been studied in the fields of psychology and management. Scholars in the two fields have traditionally focused on different aspects of power and used different theoretical models and methods to investigate their research questions. However, there is great potential in integrating insights from both management and psychology to advance theory and research on power. The main goal of this workshop is to enable and facilitate contact between power researchers from the fields of management and psychology. This workshop further aims to advance young scholars by giving them opportunities to exchange and learn from senior scientists and discuss their own work, to foster direct exchanges between scientists from different countries and institutions, and to encourage future research. This workshop is intended to be small (about 40–50 participants) in order to facilitate discussion and networking between workshop participants. Graduate students, postdocs, as well as more senior scientists are invited to submit proposals.

Organizer: Prof. Dr. Petra C. Schmid, ETH Zurich

    Speakers & Roundtable Discussion Facilitators:
    David Dubois, INSEAD, France

Ana Guinote, University College London, UK

Ena Inesi, London Business School, UK

Joris Lammers, University of Cologne, Germany

Joe Magee, New York University, USA

Pamela Smith, University of California San Diego, USA

Yaacov Trope (Keynote), New York University, USA

    Workshop organization

Talks: This workshop will include talks given by invited speakers (see list above). Three talks will focus on the effects of power on morality and (un-) ethical behavior. Three additional talks will discuss what motivates people in different power positions and how the psychological experience of power (which can be induced in high-power decision makers and also in regular employees) affects individuals' motivation, goal pursuit processes, and performance. The keynote speech will be given by Dr. Yaacov Trope on how construal level theory can be used to understand and predict behavior of powerholders in organizations.

Roundtable discussions: Roundtable discussions will be organized such that 4–5 workshop participants will sit at a table together with one of the facilitators (see list above). The workshop participants will present their ongoing work and state where they seek feedback and any open questions they have. The facilitator will structure the following discussion.

Poster presentations: Workshop participants will be given the opportunity to present a poster with their planned or completed work on power.
