Rocco and I are guest-editing a Special Issue of the TQM journal on "Balancing the "hard" and the "soft" shades of TQM: bridging conceptual advancements and managerial insights".

The Special Issue primarily aims to broaden our understanding of "soft" issues in the TQM discourse, paving the way for a systematic conceptualization of factors that determine business excellence. Proposing a synoptic view of the macro, meso-, and micro-layers of "soft" TQM, it emphasizes Human Resource Management Practices (HRMP) as a managerial bridge to mould the softness of TQM interventions and embed them in hard TQM initiatives.

We think this Special Issue is timely and will have an impact for two reasons. First, there is a revamp in the field of TQM and we think that soft issues have a critical role in the recipe for performance excellence in both public and private sector organizations. Second, HRMPs have been only partially been investigated in their interplay with TQM: therefore, our special issue is expected to significantly contribute to the advancement of what we currently know about the determinants and implications of quality excellence.

We are also organizing a Paper Development Workshop, that will be held at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" on July, 2020. Beyond urging scholars to discuss the "softness" of TQM, the PDW will nourish a fruitful dialogue about the role of HRMPs in the recipe for quality excellence and outstanding organizational performance.

The attached call for papers contains further details on what we envision.
We are looking forward to receiving your submission and to seeing you in Rome to attend our PDW.

    Yours,

Luca Gnan (University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Italy)

Rocco Palumbo (University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Italy)
