    The Center for Behavioral and Decision Research (CBDR) at Carnegie Mellon University is searching for a new lab manager. CBDR is an interdisciplinary research center at Carnegie Mellon University that brings together scholars from organizational behavior, behavioral economics, psychology, marketing, and public policy. The Steering Committee for CBDR is Professor Taya Cohen (Tepper School of Business), Professor Danny Oppenheimer (Department of Social and Decision Sciences in the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences), and Professor Alessandro Acquisiti (Heinz School of Public Policy & Management).

    The Center for Behavioral and Decision Research (CBDR) at Carnegie Mellon University is an interdisciplinary research center at Carnegie Mellon University that brings together scholars from behavioral economics, psychology, organizational behavior, marketing, and public policy.  The group meets to engage in a vigorous exchange of ideas with speakers from around the globe in weekly seminars and performs groundbreaking interdisciplinary research.

    CBDR provides researchers with a mixture of resources including specialized lab spaces, an active participant pool, computers, and equipment.  In addition, the center supports its members with direct funding for new research projects.

    Affiliates investigate topics that are both on the forefront of their respective fields of research and of interest to the public. Topics include (but are not limited to) trust and fairness, memory and decision-making, group behavior, saving and spending behavior, the effects of race, power, gender and hierarchy, moral and ethical behavior, and public health. 

    We are searching for a Lab Manager to support CBDR. This is an exciting opportunity if you thrive in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by coordinating the daily operations of the laboratories and mobile research facility ("the Data Truck") that serves over 50 faculty, doctoral students and research assistants. 

     

    Core responsibilities will include:

    • Develops and implements operating and administrative policies and procedures for the use and scheduling of the laboratories and Data Truck that align with University, Tepper School of Business and Department of Social & Decision Sciences expectations.
    • Advises laboratory and Data Truck users on experiment design. May run experiments or analyze and interpret statistical data. May contribute to the design of experiments and research protocols under the overall supervision of the members of the CBDR.
    • Performs financial recordkeeping and lab system budgeting, manages purchasing for lab system, and performs or schedules physical maintenance for the computing equipment, laboratories, and Data Truck as needed.
    • Maintains and grows subject pools, both offline and online. Coordinates course credit student research participation program. Provides support to participants and resolves research participant concerns. Oversees undergraduate research assistants and summer interns.
    • Maintains lab computers (i.e. ensuring all software is up to date, hardware is functioning); maintains laboratory space (i.e. ensuring rooms are regularly cleaned, lights work, furniture is intact); maintains the Data Truck (i.e. purchasing and filling with fuel, renewing auto insurance, completing annual vehicle inspections, ensuring satellite internet access, getting parking permits from the Pittsburgh Parking Authority, scheduling and organization of repairs).
    • Maintains the CBDR websites, assists with weekly seminar series, and searches for and applies to research funding opportunities.

    You should demonstrate:

    • Knowledge of scientific research methods, experimental design and research protocols
    • Ability to collect and record data
    • Aptitude to handle multiple projects in a timely and effective manner
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Excellent analytical, organizational, reasoning, and problem-solving skills
    • Capability to meet inflexible deadlines, work under pressure and work with frequent interruptions
    • Initiative and ability to work with limited supervision

    You should be able to work outside of normal business hours as needed as weekend and evening hours may be required.  Additionally, you may be exposed to broken glass, plastic, or metals and work will include walking distances and remaining stationary for long periods of time.  A willingness to drive the Data Truck is highly desired.

    Qualifications 

    • Bachelor's degree in psychology, social sciences, marketing, economics, behavioral decision-making, statistics, business administration, econometrics.
    • Minimum three years of related research experience; combination of education, training, and experience (student or professional) may be considered.
    • Current U.S. driver's license required.
    • Knowledge of experimental software (e.g. Qualtrics, Excel, SPSS, SONA) and of design/handling of professional, public-facing documents and webpages (e.g. HTML) highly desired.
