    BACKGROUND

    The world has moved online. Conflicts have also moved online. Thus, there is a critical need for research to study how conflicts can be effectively managed in an online world.

    Traditional assumptions about and the methods for managing conflict may need to be modified and adapted to the cyber realm. New insights are needed to better understand how conflicts arise and how they can be managed. Therefore, this special issue encourages the publication of research on managing cyber conflict.

    The goal is to publish thoughtful analyses that spur insightful reflections about the past, present, and future directions of research on cyber conflict. This can include analyses of actual online conflicts, theoretical perspectives, and the prediction of possible future scenarios.  New insights, creative solutions, and innovative ideas that move our scholarship in new directions is strongly encouraged. 

    Studies may use a variety of methodological techniques including: field studies, laboratory studies, literature reviews, meta-analyses, theory development, survey research, and analyses of archival data. This could include analysis of data from employees working within organizations, interdepartmental conflicts, business-to-business conflicts, labor relations conflicts, countries, non-governmental organizations, and other sources.  

     

    SUBMISSIONS

    The following are examples of topics that are listed just as illustrations. However, other related topics are also encouraged:

     

    • Psychological, social, cultural, and institutional factors for successful management of online conflict.
    • Overcoming the challenges of limited communication richness on negotiation and conflict management.
    • Synchronous versus asynchronous negotiation and conflict management.   
    • Innovative uses of new technologies for successful online negotiation, e.g., cloud-based documentation, muting, break-out rooms.
    • Technology limitations and optimizing apps to facilitate cyber negotiation and conflict management.
    • Overcoming the challenges of multi-party negotiation and third-party dispute resolution through online platforms.
    • Recording online negotiations versus the transient nature of interpersonal negotiation tactics.
    • Political speech and online conflict spirals.
    • The effects of anonymity in online conflicts.
    • Using cyber tools for alternative dispute resolution: arbitration, mediation, ombudsman, settlement conferences, community dispute resolution, etc.
    • Relationships between online and in-person conflicts: enhancing and moderating effects.
    • Cyberattacks and ransomware negotiations.
    • Cyber warfare attribution, depersonalization, response, escalation and de-escalation.
    • Challenges and solutions for managing online conflicts among and between groups, teams, departments, divisions within an organization, and across organizations.
    • The impact of cyber communications on international diplomacy.
    • Cybersecurity in sensitive online negotiations.

     

    All manuscripts should use clear exposition; be technically adequate; make a theoretical contribution (e.g., testing, creating, or extending theory); make an empirical contribution; be innovative, interesting, and novel; and/or have important implications for practice.
