Description: This webinar will give a brief introduction to complex responsive processes, a perspective which combines insights from the natural and social sciences. The Complexity and Management Centre at the University of Hertfordshire has been working with ideas from the complexity sciences understood in social terms since the early 90s, based on the work of Ralph Stacey. The complex responsive processes perspective invites people to take their experience at work seriously and pay attention to the emergent social dynamics of trying to get things done together. One of the most prominent illustrations of these principles is provided by the Doctor of Management programme at the University of Hertfordshire, which is run as a psychodynamic research community drawing on ideas informed by group analysis, pragmatic philosophy and process sociology refracted through the complexity sciences. The intention of this talk is to encourage reflection about what these ideas might mean for strategy-making in organizations.

    About the speaker

Professor Chris Mowles came late to the academic party, having had a background in organisational consultancy and international development. He is now Professor of Complexity and Management at the University of Hertfordshire and took over from Ralph Stacey as the director of the DMan, the Doctor of Management programme, in 2011. He has taught on postgraduate courses at universities in the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Denmark, including Copenhagen Business School. He has Group Work Practitioner status with the Institute of Group Analysis. His next book, 7 Types of Complexity, should be out by the end of the year, along with a collection of practice-based edited volumes of chapters written by graduates of the DMan programme. The volumes will address complexity in managing the public sector, complexity and leadership and complexity and consultancy.

    About Cranfield Strategy Group

The Strategy Group at Cranfield School of Management has been long recognized as a centre of excellence for research, teaching and executive development in Strategic Management. Recognizing the complex nature of the social world, we view Strategic Management as "guided emergence" and are interested in advancing the knowledge of organizational processes and managerial decisions and actions in a way that enable strategists to be effective in a world they cannot control. Our research focuses on the nature of competitive advantage, the processes of value creation and value capture, the evolution of strategic intent, and various aspects of emergent strategy, such as organizational values, sensemaking, and strategic change.
