Text Recommendations for Undergraduate Organizational Behavior Course

    Hello!
I was just asked to teach an Organizational Behavior course at my university in the Spring 21 term. I taught it at the master's level ten years ago (using McShane & Von Glinow, Organizational Behavior from McGraw-Hill) , but have not taught it at undergraduate level before, and am looking for text recommendations. McSchane & Von Glinow seems a bit too heavy for undergrads.

The previous instructor used Robbins, S.P. & Judge, T.A. (2018). Essentials of Organizational Behavior, 14th edition. Pearson. That seems like a well-written text, and the MyLab resources seem good as well. My school is encouraging us to use Cengage products, so the students can use Cengage Unlimited, so I'm also considering: Griffin, R. W., Phillips, J. M., Gully, S. M. (2020). Organizational Behavior: Managing People and Organizations, 13th Edition. Cengage, with its resources on MindTap.

Have any of you used either or both of these, and could give me a recommendation? Or perhaps another text that would be even better?

    Thanks!

Eric, I'm currently teaching undergraduate OB using Nelson, D., & Quick, J. (2019). ORGB. 6th Edition, Cengage. I really like the organization of topics into intrapersonal, interpersonal, and organizational. The text is more "magazine-like" in that chapters are 20 pages maximum and the formatting avoids walls of text, so it's more approachable for undergrads.

We have an "auto access" program with Cengage, where students pay a single flat fee for all Cengage ebooks for the semester, so it is very affordable. I can set up a link to the full book or to individual chapters in my Canvas site. I have also found many of the provided instructor materials helpful (activities, etc.). However, one drawback is that I have discovered a number of errors in questions in the test bank. I have fixed these as they come up, but it is somewhat frustrating.

I considered the Griffin et al. text, but just paging through it I had doubts that my students would read it, as it's quite text heavy.

    Hi Karen,
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm currently teaching a general management course using a Griffin text, and agree that the book is text-heavy, and also covers a lot of material very quickly. However, the support materials from Cengage in MindTap are excellent. I'll definitely check out the Nelson & Quick text. As noted, we too are using flat-fee arrangement with Cengage, so it is easier for students if I can stay with that publisher.
    Best wishes!

This is my favorite OB book.
Bauer, Talya and Erdogan, Berrin. (2015). Organizational Behavior, v. 2.0 eISBN: 978-1-4533-7119-0  It's by Flatworld knowledge. The book is under $50 and it has all the support I need. It has a test bank, and slides. I think they offer more but I never use the rest of the auxiliary material.

It is evidence-based and written clearly. It doesn't have a lot of unnecessary examples. I hate big fat books that have lots of extras just to justify a bigger price point.

Thanks for your recommendation, Laura. I've been slow in replying as I'm wrapping up one course and moving three others fully online for the rest of the semester. I'll definitely review this one.
    Have a great weekend!

I used just about all undergrad OB texts
I try to use the one that comes with great videos
    easy to use testbank
    great cases

sometimes you have to change it up

Price is also a question - my text choice may be the expensive ones - look for great ancillary material

My pleasure Eric - I sometimes use a book based on the videos because that helps me build the course

I use Whetten and Cameron. It is an excellent book and the skill assessments are great. I supplement with some readings and videos. Hope this helps.

    Hi Karen,
Thanks for the recommendation. I like skill assessments, so the students can apply the concepts they are learning right away. I'll check this text out.

    Eric and Colleagues,

The following article available at http://www.hermanaguinis.com/pubs.html provides an analysis of 13 OB textbooks (in addition to 8 in HRM, 9 in general management, and 8 in strategy):
    • Aguinis, H., Ramani, R. S., Alabduljader, N., Bailey, J. R., & Lee, J. 2019. A pluralist conceptualization of scholarly impact in management education: Students as stakeholders. Academy of Management Learning and Education, 18(1): 11-42.
    I hope this helps!
    All the best,
