We Got By with a Little Help:
Recent Perspectives on the Academic Job Market

    Organizers:
David Arena, University of Texas at Arlington
Karen Landay, University of Missouri-Kansas City

The purpose of this PDW is to bring together faculty members who were on the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 job market to provide an inclusive, informative, and applicable session for those who are (or are soon to be) on the academic job market. This PDW is meant to facilitate a discussion to address important dimensions of the job market honestly, encourage dialogue, and increase the efficacy of participants. This will assist job candidates by providing the tools they may need to showcase the best version of themselves on the market.

This will be a LIVE, SYNCHRONOUS PDW conducted in TWO sessions:

    Part 1: Thursday, July 29, 12-2pm EST (11am-1pm CST/10am-12pm MST/9-11am PST)

    • Presentations from incoming second year faculty who were on the market during the 2019-2020 job market cycle:
      • Application Process (Arjun Mitra, California State University, Los Angeles)
      • Selling Yourself (Lori Tribble, Clemson University)
    • Four breakout sessions with 2020-2021 job market participants (see below)

    Part 2: Thursday, August 5, 12-2pm EST (11am-1pm CST/10am-12pm MST/9-11am PST)

    • Presentations from incoming second year faculty who were on the market during the 2019-2020 job market cycle:
      • The Waiting Game (Sina Khoshsokhan, University of Colorado Boulder)
      • Campus/Virtual Visits (David Arena, University of Texas at Arlington)
      • Negotiation (Kris Irwin, Old Dominion University)
      • Transition to Faculty (Karen Landay, University of Missouri-Kansas City)
    • Three breakout sessions with 2020-2021 job market participants (see below)

Registration is required. The deadline to register is June 25, 2021. Participants will be accepted on a rolling basis, so earlier registration is encouraged. To facilitate interaction between speakers and participants, we are limiting the number of registrants to 90.

While 2021-2022 applicants will be prioritized for inclusion in this session, others who are not yet on the market are encouraged to apply to attend as information in this session is likely to be useful for mid-stage students as well. We expect registered participants to attend BOTH parts of the PDW. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate attendance at only one of the two sessions.

To register, please submit the following information to organizer David Arena (david.arena@uta.edu):

    • Name
    • Institution
    • Year in your program
    • Job market status
    • Email address

    • Brief summary of your research interests
    • Confirmation that you can attend both sessions
