Management research fails to impact practice because our focus is on evidence from the past that may not reflect practitioners' current reality. Further, we use this historical evidence to predict the future. However, as the current crises has shown, often the past or the present is a faulty predictor of the future. Academics need new ways of engaging with practice such that we are not only describing the present, or predicting the future based on evidence from the past, but also creating desirable future(s) along with practitioners. In this talk, I will focus on two examples of such engagement. First illustrates how researchers can cocreate knowledge with managers in the context of systematic review. Second builds the idea of 'future-oriented cocreation', where, in the context of a learning lab, researchers and managers collectively imagine and create tools and frameworks for a desirable future.
